Making the NPC's "speak" their quests

[:1]Greetings,

I was introduced to MMO's from Oblivion, which had real voices for quests. Although they were the same voice actors for most quests, this really added a more realistic touch to the quests.

There are two high-level architecture solutions if we wanted to implement this in WOW. First, we could do voice recordings, and play them for each quest. Second, we could pipe the text through a TTS engine and shoot it back out. The first requires hundreds of hours of recording and of course huge amounts of space. That said, with a community like WOW, I can see some amazing ways to accomplish this. For each quest, one could "submit a voice" and then others could vote "yeah, that's good enough" or "no, that's horrible. I consider this a very creative, but probably not realistic solution today.

I was wondering what other modder's thought about the second option? Windows has a default female TTS engine installed that isnt' great, but again, I'm so tired of reading the text its driving me insane.|||lol, ... imagine the gigs of data if we had EVERY quest in audio. I don't feel the need though (even if disregarding the technical aspects). If they implement it, i hope i can turn it off .|||What you want is either impossible or too much work just play the game as it is.

anyway most people skip the quest text and go straight to the "What do i have to do" and "Where do i have to go parts."|||Quote:

That doesn't make sense to me. First, its not impossible because other MMO's do it. Oblivion has hundreds of quests. I know WoW had thousands, but its not impossible.

Am I really the only one that wants to feel like he's in the game? Maybe MMORPG's aren't for people like me who actually want to know why their spending 100+ hours in a game...|||Quote:

Oblivion is not an mmorpg. And judging by what Blizzard did to poor Sylvanas's voice, perhaps we're better off without hearing the npcs.|||Total number of Quests:

* Original WoW total quests: 2600

* Burning Crusade: 5300

* Wrath of the Lich King: 7650

Thats not including new quests that have been added since Wraths release.

7650 x 30 (a rough guess of how many seconds an average quest giver would have to speak for)= 229,500 seconds or 63 hours 45 minutes - although I could have wildly over or under estimated it.

I don't think you appreciate the scale of the task needed to voice every single quest giver. For a game like oblivion it's possible (and possible to do it badly like oblivion), but for Warcraft I'm thinking it's a mammoth task.

As for your second option - I don't think it's actually possible or if it was..... wouldn't it just sound plain awful?

I'm gonna stick to reading - I've been doing it since I was a wee child and don't find it difficult ;)|||Quote:

Actually, SWOTOR will be the first fully voiced MMO. Others are not, some of the quests and cut scenes may be voiced, but not everything.

And as mentioned Oblivion isn't an MMO, it doesn't have to be run on multiple clients active around the general vicinity of the quest giver at the same time. So, you're comparing apples to oranges with that example.

Also, this project may very well be going beyond the parameters that Blizzard finds acceptable as an add-on.

Something to consider as well.|||Quote:

Good point about Blizzard, I've seen that they don't allow quite a few. Is there somewhere I can ask?

Yeah Obliviion isn't an MMO, but it has many of the same concepts as a MMO. The architecture is completely different, but the user experience is very simliar. Do you know what I am saying?

I can't believe I'm the first one who would find this very awesome. I've only been playing WoW for a little bit, but I'm already struggling to understand the story, or why I just killed 12 smugglers for their bandanas. I'm on an RPG server, I want to be immersed in the world, just like I was immeresed in Oblivion.|||Quote:

Don't get me wrong, I thought Oblivion was a beautiful game. The character customization still makes me drool. Add Fable's decision based character morph, and you have the character building I want.

But imagine this:

New npc. Has voice. And new quest:

First player clicks on him: "Greetings, hero, I have a task..."

Second player midclicks: "Greetings, hero..."

Third player: "Greetings, he...."

"Greeting..."

"Gree. Gree. Gree."

And yes, Wow, in its entirety, has thousands of quests. While Warcraft III had some decent voice acting, Wow's current voice acting is...well ... often regrettable and I'm sure if I want to have the reality clash with what my mind's ear puts in. As hard as it is to believe, I don't play on a rp server, but most people here can tell you I advocate immersion playing. I'm just not sure I want to hear the end result of this idea.|||Quote:

Official forums, in particular the UI one might be the best option then.

Although as semiiramiis mentions, you do run the knock knock risk.

What that is?

Gather some friends, and have them repeat the following scene.

One of them knocks on the table, they then say: hello is anyone there.

They then repeat this, but as soon as they say hello, the person on their right knocks on the table and repeats the action, and then the person on their right does the same thing as well.

In the end you won't be able to hear what's going on.
