[:1]Hi guys.
I don't know if this is the correct place on these forums to post this or not but here goes. I'm curious to know if LUA supports RSS feeds. I've been annoyed a little of late waiting for raid invites to start so I start browsing various blogs etc, only to find I've missed a raid invite when I go back to WoW. I'd like a mod that can have multiple RSS feeds going to it and then be readable whilst in WoW, hopefully avoiding missing a raid invite. I've tried looking around for a mod like this but couldn't find one, so either no one's had this idea or it's just not doable.
Any help with this will be appreciated, cheers.|||If I recall correctly, addons in WoW can only use objects within WoW itself, and therefor they can not connect to the internet and so on.
I might be wrong though|||For security reasons you are not allowed to do things such as download data or read from local files in a WoW addon, however it's possible to kinda do what you want.
When WoW loads its addons it will load data which that addon has previously saved (the files are in the WTF directory), you could write a program which runs in the background of your OS that downloads a bunch of data from RSS feeds and puts it in a file WoW will load in to your addon.
You wouldn't be able to get any new data from within WoW so the program would have to download anything the user could be interested in, this also means you wouldn't be able to get any data added to the feed since you started WoW without restarting it, but at least it would be something.
Edit:
Actually now that I think about it the external program could just save the data straight into the addon directory, that would allow images. And /reloadui might be able to solve the issue with having to restart WoW to get new data.|||Cheers for the replies.
Thanks for pointing out the limitations but it does sound like it's possible to do I guess. I'd be extremely interested and thankful if anyone takes this on as my knowledge of LUA is limited.|||mods cannot connect to the internet.|||I can resoundly concur that there is no way at the moment for wow addons to connect to anything outside wow.
As for a solution: I advise running wow windowed so you'll have easy access to your non-wow tools.|||Check my post for a solution to the issue with addons not being able to connect to the internet. That limitation does not mean you couldn't make the display part of an RSS reader as an addon and feet it data some other way.
